W123 Cell Phone Chargers and Cigarette Lighters

When I first got my 81' 300D last winter, the cigarette lighter would make my phone charger light up if I wiggled it around just to the right spot.. it seems as though it is a lot deeper and wider than modern cigarette lighter ports and not one car charger that I tried it in would fit and or stay in the port without falling out. Then it would not even charge if I held it (I'm guessing I blew a fuse)

What does everyone else do to charge their phones whilst driving 300D? I was thinking about hard wiring an inverter directly to the battery and having A/c plugs.. what should I do?

Could you go into a little detail about that. Such as where you wired it into and where to located it?

I needed power for Sirius, IPOD and my cell. I had hard wired the Sirius to the existing lighter. I added an outlet to the inside of the glove box, also hard wired to the lighter in the ash tray. Then ran the USBs' out through a hole in the back of the glove box to the corner of the dash near the console. It works fine but not sure it's going to stay this way.

I have a cigarette lighter (power source) in the glove box. I used the power from the light. just be sure to pull from the unswitched side. This is a key on only power source.

the side contacts on the 12v connector are springs. you may have some luck by just bending them outwards a bit more.

That always worked for me. I think it's a little bit wider. Probably why I always see it referee to as "cigar lighter" on wiring diagrams, etc.
I just stick a flat screwdriver behind the metal tabs and turn slightly. It makes a tighter fit.

my cig lighter 12v plug hasnt worked since 1996

@ MBZ300CD -- do you have a thread with detailed pics? I use a USB cable (from my headunit) to power my Garmin Nav; would be nice to have a seperate 12v outlet like what you brilliantly did.

For mine, I ran a new fused wire from the battery for two new outlets. One for Satellite Radio and one for a GPS/voltmeter/other 12v gadget.

On the one with the satellite radio you can see, I have that wired where the left is constantly on / available and the right one is switched with a relay being fed trigger from the original positive at the cigar lighter.
