fuel shut off solenoid...

hey guys, my old benz has finally got to where it wont shut off. of course i have plenty of vacuum etc. and i have narrowed it down to the fuel shutoff solenoid.
PLEASE tell me that i can change that without removing the oil canister????
can it be done or not????

thanks guys for your quick response.

Yes, no need to remove the oil filter canister. Make note of it's orientation as you remove it.

You must reinstall in the same fashion, the hook and vac nipple.

BTW... i didnt see any bolts or anything around it, do you just pull it out from behind the IP? also, if theres a hook to attach it around something, i dont see how you would have much room to manuver it before removing. IE, got any more info??? LOL

Follow the shut off line to behind the IP and below the VCV. It is held in place with a metal bracket that has a bolt on each corner.

It will have three gaskets, paper, metal and paper, note the notch, there is a corresponding tab on the underside.

Also note the nipple (orifice) and the hook orientation. You MUST line the hook back the same way you removed it, so pay close attention. It is possible to create a run away engine situation if you install it differently that it came out.

IIRC, I removed the screws holding the VCV in place to gain access. I did not remove the linkage, but the unit was able to move around enough.

Be sure to put the square mounting bracket on correctly too.

Be extremely sure that the sheet metal Hook goes back into the right place. Other wise it shoves the rack into the full fuel position and your Engine takes off at high revs/engine runs away.
Some people the precaution of removing the Intake Tube so that a Flat piece of Board can cover the intake and cut off the Air to the Engine in the event of a runaway.

The other way is to clamp off the Fuel Inlet Hose, however the Engine will still run some after that.

Also there is Vacuum Shutoff Switch mounted on the Steering Colum that you actuate when you turn the Key.
