Replacing driveshaft Universal Joint?? - Mercedes-Benz Forum

Replacing driveshaft Universal Joint??

While I am underthere replacing all the parts on the driveshaft (ie. flex discs, boots, center bearing) Should I look into the universal joint? Are these prone to heavy wear, I cannot find any replacements on MB supplier sites. I would like to just think its good to go.

check it for flat spots by moving it back and forth.

1983 240D 4-speed, DD
1974 240D turbo 617 swap, W201 5-speed project

no problem, flat spots or any looseness or movement out of design. Personally, I have always though it was interesting that the driveshaft even has a U-joint on it on these cars. Does not move much being essentially anchored everywhere.

In the 3 years I have been reading the various Forums I can only remember 1 person replacing the U-Joint.

really? Ive done it twice on different personal 123s. I was doing manual conversions on them though, so at the time, I just figured do it while I was in there.

Both of them had minor flat spots, one was way worse than the other though. The flat spot could not be attributed to an noticeable driving concern, but were bad enough to warrant service once i discovered them. If I had put the original back on, I probably would not have noticed any problem though.

I am going to add some info this old thread. I am prsently involved in changing the U-joint on my Car.
On another forum it has that the direct fit U-joint is a Lobro ((Also may be written LÖBRO or LEOBRO) U728/4. That brand name is part of the GKN company.
I located the site below and if you search with the U726/4 or you search with my 83 300D I got the info below.

[Note, I only have one U-joint on my car but apparently some 123s had 3 piece Drive Shafts that have 2 U-joints.]

However, I used the 22 2537 031 part number and did a part number search at Autohausaz and it appeared to cross reference to 9004100031 for about $18.

Since Autohausaz has free shipping if you order more than $50 I ordered some other stuff and the 9004100031 U-joint (I decided to take a chance that it was the right one).
I am still waiting for the U-joint to arrive so I am not sure if it is the correct one or not.

I also found another number from one of the GKN companies that makes U-joints Uni Cardan reference #18725 Cross references to the Lobro U727/4

If you live in Australia Hardy Spicer #K5-A657 may be the correct number
