wagon roof rack question

Does anybody know how MB spec'd the roof racks on the w123 wagon? I'd like to figure out if cross bars were spec'd did the roof itself also get the vinyl/rubber strips that run the length of the roof? Or were these two separate options, etc. Or did MB add the rubber stripping on the roof at a later date/model year? I've seen wagons with just about every roof rack combination, including no rack on some euros, and just wonder how they came factory and if there were changes year to year.

Thanks,

I believe all aspects to be independent options. The only element that I know of to be year dependent are the rubber grommets on the roof rack cross bars which came about on later cars, not sure of the year. They supposedly have to do with decreased wind noise. I have the only wagon I have ever seen that has NO roof rack whatsoever. US spec wagons (to the best of my knowledge) all had both roof racks and the roof runners but not necessarily cross bars.

leave it up to weezy baby

Good to know. But I'm fairly certain that many US spec came without runners. That might be a year by year change, not sure. I've never seen a US wagon without a roof rack either.

My '81 lacks runners. How do they attach? Seems like they would be a pain to wash/wax around.

Yep. Not sure how they attach. I'd guess that they use the same little orange berries that attaches the side molding.

from what I understand:

cross bars were intended to be included with cars with the body protection runners OR if you purchased the ski box which requires the cross bars for installation.

I have a brochure somewhere that shows all the optional widgetry for the roof.

Been a year now...I suppose you never found that catalog?

I've been researching and trying to find photos of an original full-length roof rack in order to determine what type of finish they had when new. Not many photos out there on the interwebs. (Google actually brought me back to this post...).
