Hey man great progress so far. The thing that I am wondering is what you plan to do with mounting up the om617 with it's front sump oil pan and the 4x4 blazer frame being designed for a rear sump pan? I'm not saying it can't be done, but it might be a little bit of a headache.
Yeah its part of the challange, however its been done many times, like in for rangers, jeeps ect. If it was easy it would be far more common.. IF i need to ill be redoing some of the steering linkages and re working the frame crossmembers in the front, but it really looks like i may not have to..
OR it could be as somple as doing mounting everything up 2" higher than normal and doing a 2" body lift to make it all fit.. I have plenty of options..
But yes your correct the biggest challenge is that front sump. However there have been many solutions to this by others including making it shorter ect..
I will only for sure be able to tell once i get to test fit the benz motor in the blazer..

1984 300d Turbo Diesel drive line going into a 2000 Chevy Blazer
and Yes I'm shouting it, that was the biggest pain in the rear!! I'll be very glad to get a much simpler drive line in this thing... took 4 hours to get that thing out. mainly because of having to deal with all the electronics and other stuff the newer cars have, and not to mention that drive line is shoehorned into the blazer.. the 4.3 is just a small block thats missing 2 cylinders.. so its a tight fit.. Glad its out!!
Here is a picture deer hunter style!!!
ANy ways tomorrow will be alot of clean up and putting back together of the blazer.. getting it ready for a test fit of the benz motor.
Todays progress was small, I decided to get the Blazer ready for the new motor, worked on getting the front axle/differential out of the truck... didn't get it out but made some progress however I have the entire day tomorrow to work on it..
Progress today.. got the front diff and axles out of the blazer, cleaned up the engine bay of useless mounts and other stuff that wasn't needed.. put back in the wiring harness in the blazer, put the battery mount tray back in, hooked up the computer ect, that runs all the electric windows and accessories on the blazer.. also ripped the gear sensing unit front the blazer tranny (this shows what gear you are in on the led screen on the dash), and the speed sensor from it and the temp and oil sensor from the motor. I'm going to try to get all the stock gauges to work.. that should be interesting.... notably the speedo..
Then I pulled the blazer out of the shop, I want to turn it around so its facing the other way so I have better room to manuver the OM617 into its engine bay.. Also did a load of cleanup in the shop once I pulled the blazer out..
Next step
get the blazer in the shop rear end first and then test fit the OM617

Wahoo!! loads of progress today.. the big question... Will it fit? Yes it will!!
Now, to do this i needed to remove the AC compressor from the benz motor, that was planned anyway.. don't need air in MN that often and windows do the job well.
I did cut down one cross member under the oil pan to get it to sit nice in the engine bay, that was after this photo was taken..
Surprisingly I wont need to redo any steering linkages, its a close fit but it all worked out well, the benz motor and tranny are a bit lighter than the stock drive train.. so it sits a bit higher up front now, but shackle extensions in the rear will take care of leveling it all out..
I also pulled the mechanical clutch fan, I'll be running a electric fan in front of the radiator
Now my one BIG question, can I take the stock oil filter out and add a remote filter inline in the oil cooler lines.. I'm having a problem will pulling the stock oil filter from the benz motor when its in place.. it was always a problem in the benz also , but this wont work in the blazer. Any one done this?

Dunno if anyone's gone remote but.. one prob is the stock oil filter housing has a built in thermostat that controls the flow of oil to the cooler to control temps.
Diff engines have diff housing though so could be that one may fit better from another installation.
The engine was installed in 4 diff models of benzes that i'm aware of & prob more.
W116, W123, W126, G Wagen..
I did find one person that remotely mounted the stock oil filter. this may be a solution..
A thermostat to control oil temp?.. hmm, seems you'd want it as cool as possible.. maybe just getting rid of the stock oil filter assembly all together and running a remote. filter then to the oil cooler would work just fine..
As for other filter assemblies.. I assume there all going to sit in the same location.. I just dont see that working.. well unless I want to lift the drivers side of the motor ever time I want to change the oil filter.. just doesn't seem practical
Now if i could eliminate that long shaft on the oil filter lid I'd be in business.. that's whats causing problems.. i can only pull it out half way..
looks as if i could actually cut that shaft, since there seems to be a opening near the top for oil to flow, simply cutting it would make that hole bigger.. but I don't see a reason it would not still function normally. may need to ensure that the lower half of the shaft cant get dislodged from the filter housing.. This could be a solution to my problem.. Ill dig into it tomorrow and see what it looks like..
As I said my issue is I cant fully pull out the filter housing lid.. if this shaft was cut near the top , enough to center the filter ect.. I easily could do this.. it would solve the issues.
