can't open hood...

i tried to pop the hood yesterday and the release inside the car didn't work. the cable still seems to be attached to the handle/mechanism, but there was no resistance when i pulled it and the hood remained firmly shut so i couldn't use the latch which comes through the hood. this is a particular problem since i have a vacuum problem at present and need to open the hood to shut off the car - i know, i need to deal with this, pronto, too.

any suggestions?

Make a small hook in the end of a coat hanger, then slip it through the grill and grab the little plastic handle that normally pops out through the grill when you pull the hood latch, that should open it

not sure i was clear...

frans,

thanks, i'd seen that thread, but i think that one addresses the problem if one can release the hood from inside the car but not open it from outside it. or maybe i'm not understanding things clearly.

likewise, 123guy, i've pulled on the plastic tab, but it won't open. the hood is still firmly shut and pulling on the tab won't seem to release it.

what i'm hoping to do is to get to the point where the hood releases so that i can fish for the plastic tab and open it then. does that make sense?

forgive me if i've misunderstood something here, i'm just trying to clarify in case i wasn't clear.

thanks,
jason

Jason, I had exactly the same problem that you had - no matter how hard I pulled at the hood-release inside the car, it wouldn't pop the hood. That's how I discovered the screwdriver method. Don't bother pulling the hood tab; it won't work.

Pity I can't help you in person ...

Cant see the thing you show on the pictures in the other thread.
Is it behind the plastic located next to the hood tab mechanisme?

I have a flat battery and my loved W123 is my only car so I am now stuck...

And the only way is to destroy the plastic cover?

No way! I am not doing anything that will hurt my W123, hehe

Any other way? Mercedes had to make a way around this problem.

If you have enough slack on the cable can you grip the wire with vice-grips at the lever and pull?

BTW the Mercedes Gods on this forum will NOT look down upon you if you remove that plastic cover. Here's what it looks like front and rear.
