72 220d manual tranny in a 76 240d possible?

I have a 72 220d with a manual transmission. Would it be okay to put it in my 240D which has a s...l....o....w... auto tranny? would it make it slower or would it work fine or mess up?

It should bolt up, I haven't done it but the motors are nearly identical and it would give it some more control of the rev range.....all 4000rpm's or so
