I apologize for probably not searching as well as I could have... I did a quick search and didn't see my situation. Anyways, I went to go out for dinner Mon. night after the car had been run long distance about 2 hours prior. I turned the key over two clicks to get the guages and glow plugs going and waited for the light to go out. Everything was normal until I turned the key over for the starter and everything went dead just as if I disconnected the battery. I won't go into more details but I've had a VERY BUSY week and won't have time until sat. to look at it. Are there some main fuses I should look at first. Does anyone have any ideas of the cause? I just did filters, valves, fluids, water pump & rad. flush, belts, and I want to get this thing going reliably so I can get rid of my rice burner and get another Benz.
While I've started a post.... I have to admit I'm not very good at searching. For this situation i put in the words "dead" "start" "electrical" "fuses" in combinations and by themselves. What words would you all have used for this problem.
Also..... I checked my blowby last week after watching the DieselGiant video. I his video there was no smoke and no oil. For me there was a lot of oil flying and plenty of smoke. At what point does the smoke become a concern? Why wasn't there oil flying around in the Diesel Giant video?
I would first check the connections to the battery, corrosion and stuff, make sure they're tight. And check it to make sure it has 12v.If that checks out, look at the ground strap that comes off the battery and bolts to your inner fender, pull the bolt out and scuff the rust that has formed there.I've had the same problem with crappy battery terminals that just wouldn't tighten up well, after I replaced them it was fine. Before they were replaced it would happen from time to time and I would just wiggle the terminals and it would fire right up.If your problem isn't with the battery or connections, I think I would next look at the ignition switch, not sure.let us know what happens with it.good luck
a loose or "breaking" power or ground cable from the battery will do that id start there first. As for the blow by how warm was the motor coz i had a motor that had great compression ,but if i had done a 2 hour run or so and THEN did the ol cap trick it would puff smoke and pspit a lil oil....so try it when its dead cold.
these guys are spot on. to run glowplugs, small lamps, etc, even a bad battery connection is enough to trick you into thinking you have ample continuity. when the time comes, however, to kick that solenoid and turn over diezilla, the amperage required to initiate this is enough to reveal a fault in a ground strap or loose/corroded battery terminal, and blacken every lamp. head to the battery and start there. trace the path through the main fuses. also, there may be an electrical short or other malfeasance in the starter circuit, although this would likely trip a big-daddy fuse, and only happen once.
cheers.
