Pool of coolant

Hi Folks,

Arrived back from RAGBRAI cycle on sat evening and noticed a big pool of coolant under my car. I drove the car 10 miles on fri night... noticed it didn't reach normal operating temp the last few short journeys and it has been losing water but I thought it was coming from the short fat hose to the thermostat that has perished (new one ordered).

There was no coolant there on Sat morning when I left the house??

I'm Sure there is no water coming out of the seep hole on the pump, which is what I would be lead to expect by the manuals.

I would love to know what's going on.

Thanking you in anticipation

coming from somewhere under waterpump

Cheers Washerman,

Went out and removed the watercap, filled with water and crawled under. The water started coming out straight away in drips from the front of the engine. I wiped all clean and dry and could see a little trickle coming over the lip of the engine from the direction of the water pump housing...

So I think it is the water pump; drat

Will do a search on how to install a new or remanu pump... will let you know how it goes

Thanks,
Paul

Been awhile since I've checked, but it used to be that the only safe way to go was to buy a rebuilt pump from Mercedes. They were dirt cheap not too long ago. The aftermarket ones tended not to have the same clearance between the impellers and the housing, causing the car to run too hot. Even if the price difference is more than a few bucks, I would buy the Mercedes rebuilt. Don't forget the O ring too and maybe the gasket.

Sounds like sound advice; I'll take a look around for one rebuilt merc water pump.

Thanks sokolof
