W123 gas to diesel conversion questions

I have a 1979 280E with a questionable motor, and I would like to swap the motor out for one that I can run on biodiesel. Does anyone know if an engine from a 240D
or 300D would bolt up to the transmission in the 280E? I found someone who will sell me a 240D motor for $200 with all of the wiring, engine mounts, etc. but not the
rest of the drivetrain. If it will bolt up what additional parts would I need? I figure I could use the existing gas tank, as it already has a return line and just clean it out
well and replace the fillter tube. Thanks!

Interesting thought. The ultimate source would be to ask a mercedes mechanic, they should know everything. I don't know if you have one around, i do so that's where i would go. Check manuals for both cars. You could probably even email the national headquarters. They are really good usually. I asked them once for some cruise control diagrams and they sure enough mailed me a packet with a bunch of print outs (taken from authentic German sources). So, definitely check with someone who does Mercedes professionally.

Trouble on the horizon!
I've done this, sure it can be done but a differant diesel car wil be cheaper and easier.
You cannot put a gasser tranny behind a diesel engine although it will fit.
You need all the engine wires, from battery and fusebox to steering lock and lamp switch. You need a complete exhaust. The tacho instrument, the differantial...etcetra,etcetra. I am completly sure you will need a million more items, so don't do this unless you have a complete spare car (and then you didn't need to anymore, right?)

I don't need to pass smog where I live (rual oregon, USA). I've decided that I will try to find a replacement gas engine, sell the car, and use the money to buy a 300D.....

If it'll be a wagon, it will be better handling the extra weight due to the selfleveling system.

Fuel tank is the same... but your E has a restrictor in the filler neck that needs to be removed (it prevents someone from sticking a bigger diesel fuel filler in there). You could use the existing fuel tank as long as you clean it well. Eastwood has some great products for cleaning fuel tanks.

Oh, and I agree with everyone else: unless you have a ton of spare time it would be much easier (and most likely cheaper) to buy the car you want instead of building it.
