Hi all. The original antenna was "accidentally" snapped when backing into our garage by my Dad. We had ordered a replacement from Hirschmann through Precision Auto Parts, but unfortunately it was not compatible. I am guessing it was meant to use used on Sedans and Coupes. So we bit the bullet and bought a brand new mast from Mercedes. Our local dealer offered to put it in for free, but when my Dad came back with the car, even when the antenna was in the off position, it was still raised somewhat! It telescopes to the max position with the switch, and will lower as much as it can when switched off. But for some reason it will not retract all the way. My Dad said that the tech said to get it to go all the way down he would have to take apart the drive box which could get very costly if he couldn't put it back together properly!? I feel this is unacceptable to have the antenna collecting dirt everytime the car is driven. Eventually I am going to snap it just by brushing by the car! Have any of you had this problem before? Here is a pic of the antenna in the "off" position:
If someone tells me they will put it in for free, that implies that they know what they are doing and will do the job right. Do what you want, but my personal approach would be going back with the car and raising as much hell as necessary to get it done right... for free as promised.

Well I got a little mixed up with the details. The dealer offered to put the antenna back together, and they did, except it wouldn't go down all the way, so they said they wouldn't have enough time to take apart the antenna box...
I do however, and I got far, and see what I need to get to inside, however I can't for the life of me how to detacth the power connector from the box. It looks like there are 2 halves which should just separate when pulled apart, but that's not the case... So does anyone know how this comes apart?
I HOPE I don't have to do any soldering. I don't see how they would have soldered each antenna at the factory on the assembly line...
Speaking of soldering, I came across a neato new product that you squeeze onto your wire connection, then hit with a lighter, and it solders at low temperature. Got it at Lowe's I think it's called "Solder it"
