I spoke with a mechanic today as I went in to pick up some new tires. He used to be a chief mechanic at a Benz/Import dealer in New Jersey, and apparently has reasonable experience with the company. He commented on my mileage (257,860) and spoke highly of the diesel engines (a common occurence). BUT, what absolutely threw me back in my seat was that when you own a Mercedes that reaches 500,000 miles, and you can prove it (he wasn't specific on that part), Mercedes gives you a brand new car. Has anyone heard this? If not, its an excellent advertising ploy and I intend to contact a Mercedes rep. immediately...Even though I've got at least 20 years to hit 500,000. Why do I even care?
RE: A Comment from a Mechanic on the "500,000 mark"
I had heard that if you reach the 1 million documented, you get a new car. i've heard that from the BMW side too. dont know if it's true but that would be great if it were!

New car? I would prefer a new W123 exactly like the car I have but with more options. Maybe even a 1985 year model with the better gear ratios, less troubles with equipment, etc.
Perhaps even Euro lights, ABS, all options, etc... or, maybe, even the car of your choice! (An AMG W123 comes to mind [:D])
Here's a good question: Usually when your car reaches that mileage (it's a matter of when [:P]) they ask that you give it to them as a museum piece to display. Would you agree to giving it to them, or would you keep driving it? I think I'm lost on this one, even if they give me a brand new W123 just like mine. But if the car was a beater, rustbucket, or nearly about to fall apart after all those miles, the choice is obvious. [:D]

if the MB AG wants to display my coupe in the museum caus of a million miles, i'd give it over immediately, provided i get the "new model" of my car issued to me at the factory, this being a silver CLK 320 CDI

Not true, but it is true that if you reach 500 miles with a Yugo you'll get a new car. :)

Hey dude! Don't knock the Yugo. I still see one now and then 'crusing' around.
People knock Pinto's also, but I had a couple of them and they were one of the most reliable cars I've owned. Both of them had 250,000+ miles when I got rid of them and they were still running good.
