Speaker crackling part 2

Hello,
I just removed the speaker grille and discovered that the speaker is in perfect looking condtion--no cone damage. I also cleaned the connector behind the glovebox of the car's speaker wires with the speakers own wires. Yet the speaker still crackles, intermittently--sometimes its good, othertimes really terrible.
Should I try and remove the radio and clean the connection to it(if therei is a cleanable connection) or what? Is the speaker just shot?
