HeLp PleAsE!? 240d won't shut off, even when I press on shut off switch under hood?
I just bought a very nice 79 240d but it doesn't shut off when I turn the key OR when I press on the shut off switch under the hooD...Why is this, what can I do to fix it for cheap? This car rides Soooo nice...No play in the steering wheel like in my 300d..no noise.just this...Help ! [V]

sounds like part if the linkage to the IP isn't connected. anyhow you can put a piece of wood over the aircleaner intake to block the flow of air to the engine. that will shut it off. be careful when you do this! do NOT use your hand!

Hi Turbosing777
This tells you how to replace.

Picture shows you what needs replacing.
Be VERY,VERY carefull because if you make
a mistake you can have a runaway and if
your not quick a blown engine.
Have something to cut the fuel supply
line(messy yes, but better than a blown engine)
and a block of wood to cover the intake.
(as mentioned by previous poster.

Do Not Block Intake! it is safer to cut off the fuel supply!
If you block off the air intake, you could "suck a valve" and damage the engine.
Chuck
i think you're talking about a runaway? somehow at idle i don't think blocking the intake would do any damage.
anyhow you could always loosen the injector line nuts
to stop the flow of fuel or blow a co2 fire extinguisher into the intake.
neither practical in this situation. better would be to repair the vaccum shut off valve and the IP linkage.
RE: HeLp PleAsE!? 240d won't shut off, even when I press on shut off switch under hood?
I think I know what Chuck is saying. The tremendous vacuum created when you block the intake will lead to the engine sucking the next nearest object in its path--the valves. Am I right in thinking this way?
If so then the CO2 fire extinguisher should do it. Cutting off the fuel line might also put air in the system.

OK....I unhooked the vaccum box, cleaned it, and hopefully put it back in again. There was oil in the line which means I need a new vacuum box right? I hope cleaning it did something and I am afraid to start it thinking I might have not reinstalled the vacuum box right...I think I did though. So if I buy a new one of those, will it work right? All the hoses look decent and not leaking...I taped up anywhere I thought it might leak...I'm going out now to start it up...Thanks for the posts and any more will be helpful.

Has anyone actually have this valve thing happen to them? It doesn't set well with me because if it sucks a valve it would be the exhaust valve as the intake is already open. Soon as the exhaust opens it vacuum will be relieved and it will shut again.

do you mean the shutoff valve at the end of the IP?
if so would keep a block of wood or something similiar handy to block the intake if necessary when you start it!! or else a 17mm open end wrench to crack injector lines in case of a runaway!
