Crackling speaker

Hello,
I still have the original radio in my car-and have no problems with it, however the front passenger side speaker crackles intermittently. I first thought their might have been a loose/dirty connection so i took out the govebox and cleaned the connection ppoints between the speaker/radio. The speaker still crackes--and I thought the cone on the inside was dry rotted--but if it was then wouldn't the speaker crackle all the time? Is the connection to the back of the radio bad--or is the speaker just shot and needs to be replaced? Also, the rear passanger side speaker crackles sometimes but is not as loud/often.
Any help you guys could provide would be appreciated--like what kind of replacement speaker I would need to buy.

RE: Crackling speaker

How old is your Benz? I'm not sure what could be causing your problem if all connections have been cleaned, and if you're certain that the speaker cone is not cracked. Here's my experience, though...

I upgraded my audio system over Christmas (1982 300 CD Turbo). I had gone back and forth on whether or not I wanted to stay all original or modify the audio. My car is my daily driver, and I am a music enthusiast, so I decided the hell with it and palced the original safely in a box. I upgraded to a Sony head unit with XM and MP3 (GORGEOUS install!), a sub/amp combo tube in the trunk, and new Rockford Fosgate spekers at all four corners. I can't believe the sound I now get out of her. It even drowns out that beautiful diesel sound!

That having been said, all four factory speakers were shredded. I kept them just to look at and show friends, but the cones were in pieces. The more amazing part? I was still getting okay sound out of them at the time of removal!
