1983 300d -- trunk won't open

I can't get the trunk open on my new 1983 300d. The key (I tried both) will not turn and the vacuum system is dead. Does anyone have any suggestions to overcome this problem?

Were you ever able to open the trunk with the key?

Maybe the ignition or trunk lock had been changed at some point? If it's the original trunk lock, then you can get a new key from the dealer. That might be the cheapest solution if it works. If the trunk lock was changed at some point, then you're out of luck. Can also check with a locksmith.

Take out the bottom cushion of the rear seat. Push the two buttons on the bottom of the leading edge of the cushion and lift up the bench. Look on the left drivers side for a metal wire encased in clear plastic, it has a loop on the end of it. It will be teathered together with abunch of wires. Pull on the loop (hard) and your trunk will open. This is the emergency method when your vacuum system fails that the dealer will charge you an arm and a leg for.

You most likely hae a vaccum problem. I had sorta the same problem with my 240D. I could only get the trunk open if I started the car and let the pressure buildup. Then I took it in for a valve adjustment and the techie disabled a faulty vaccum thingy for the pasenger door. Now all the doors open with the vaccum but the passenger door which was disabled must be closed manually. Now if I open the driver's door all locks open including the trunk. My key still doesn't do anything so I am thinking the previous owner had the lock changed and it doesn't fit the key any longer. At ;east now I don't have to start the car to get in the trunk :-)

I got it open by accessing the unlock vacuum hose that is under the carpet on the passenger's front seat. I used a mityvac to provide vacuum and it opened right away! There was lots of garbage in the trunk that has probably been there a long time.
