engine cleaning ???

I was wondering if anyone knows the proper way to clean the engine on a diesel 123. I think its pretty straightforward but I figured I ask the pros. So shed some light my brethren. Also if anyone has a sunroof switch for sale or lying around that would be ideal.
thanks!

RE: engine cleaning ???

First be sure that your engine is cold, you don't want to crack hot parts with cold water.

What I did with my diesel W123 was spray the engine compartment with water, dose it really well. Then sprayed on Simple Green, try to get into the hard-to-reach areas like under the fuel injector pump, under the air cleaner, in crevices between hard-to-reach objects like between engine and fuel pump, underneath the powersteering reservoir, and so on. When you finish spraying Simple Green, just rinse off well.

Make sure that the turbo inlet pipe (J-shaped plastic pipe) seals are tight, you don't want water there. Also make sure all vacuum lines are tight, and there are no possible openings where water can seep in.

Then target the underside of the engine. Same process - rinse, Simple Green, rinse. This time you'll need a high-pressure water source to remove the road dirt well.

It would be handy to have an air pump with you, after cleaning use it to dry the engine.

Don't forget to lubricate the throttle linkages after this. Chances are you'll take the grease away.
