Fluid Substitutes

My 300TD did not come with an owners manual, and I am wondering what commonly available fluids I can feed her. A MB dealership may not always be handy.

What hydraulic fluid can I use for the leveling system, is quality power steering fluid good?
How about engine oil? I have been using Amsoil in my
36 year old Ford with very good results, seems I've seen Amsoil marine diesel around, is there something
better?
I have switched over to DOT 5.0 for my Ford brakes,
because of it's low corrosive qualities, has anyone
tried it in their Mercedes?
I think I have the washer fluid situation covered, but if anyone has any recommendations....
Thanks,
Richard U

RE: Fluid Substitutes

In an effort to avoid wars/conflicts/controversies/and other unpleasantness, I’ll preface this post with the statement that this is what I put in my car, which runs perfect, quite, and cool – I’m not saying others should do as I do.

Engine oil: 15w 40 Delvac with Hengst, Knecht, or Mann filter element.

MB power steering fluid.

MB coolant.

Dexron ATF

Textar brake pads with MB paste.

Hengst, Knecht, Bosch, or Mann for other filter and part applications, these are the primary OEM suppliers for MB of this era.

Welcome and good luck.

RE: Fluid Substitutes

I replaced the front calipers and flushed and replaced the brake fluid w/ dot 5 and its no different. the secret to healthy brakes is flush regularly. as far a s oil, I use rotella 15/40 in the summer and 10/40 in the winterf I live in the north east usa.my excursion uses it year around and it is nort too happy on really cold days but that is why there is 2 900cca batterys from factory.I have the car manualls if you need them , I have a 83 td myself. e- mail me at buster172@hotmail.com and I can get it for you, just the cost of mail of course! tital the e-mail benz books 83 so I will know its you. regards, rousch

RE: Fluid Substitutes

The fluid specs from the owners manual can be found here.

The hydraulic fluid is not specified. I would use the OEM fluid, in a blue bottle, I forget the manufacturer.
