lock cylinder r & r

How do you remove the lock cylinder from the doors and truck to have it keyed to another key? Cannot find the job in my shop manual. My cars are early 80's MB diesels.

It's good to see pictures before you dive in.

I had purchased a new door handle/lock to replace the aging one in the car I just sold, but I never got around to installing it. Rather than take the hit on eBay, I decided to replace the one in the car I still own. It was still clean and tight, but the spring mechanism on the new one was fresher.

Here are a few of the things I learned:

If the grooves running down the original key doesn't match the replacement key, you can't just replace the lock leaves. The whole tumbler needs to get swapped. I figured that out after carefully cleaning, lubing, and swapping all the leaves and sticking the key in. Rats!

There's no way to get to the "third" front screw on the 1982 coupe by removing the door panel. You can see it, but there is a bend of door metal that will prevent a straight screwdriver from getting to it. Removing the door panel is just extra unnecessary work.

A shot of silicone spray under the front and rear of the handle's black plastic trim will allow the trim to slide back without leaving too much trim exposed in the front and too little in the rear when scooting it back into place.

You can do it. I did it yesterday while stripping my parts coupe. I used a long medium sized flat headed screw driver. You will have to unscrew it on an upward angle.

Okay, maybe you can hit half of the Philips head with a standard screwdriver. Not exactly what I'd call a proper angle, though. And it seems they added that hole expressly for that purpose. Maybe they designed the upper inside bulge after forgetting about the path they created. They should have probably added an indentation in that middle part at least.

I hear you. I only did it that way after trying the way you were talking about. But the screws were just too tight and I didnt want to bend the tabs they slide on.
