While removing the alternator last month I noticed there was tons of oil on the bottom of my york style compressor. I'm afraid it may be low on oil since there is alot on the bottom of it, where do I add or check the oil level? Is there a bolt I have to remove, or do I put it in like you would freon? Thanks

You don't have to take to mechanic to add oil just add one or two oil charge kits. However, if want to fix problem then you have to take to mechanic. Looks like seal on compressor is bad. So adding oil will just cause more oil to leak. You need to replace seals or replace compressor. Maybe it's just one of the o rings on the hoses has blown. Find cause of leak and repair it. Are you still running R12? You can get R12 fairly cheap on ebay the mechanic will charge alot for R12. Save the OZONE have the R12 recovered.
Well it was more like grease, I thought it was oil. I was just thinking the valve cover gasket was leaking and I replaced it. It may have been the oil from when it was leaking a long time ago, I'll wipe off and see if it comes back. The air is ice cold. Thanks i'll keep you updated.

If you have only slight seepage of refrigerant oil, which then of course attracts dirt, maybe you do not need to panic. However, if you see a droplet of oil ready to fall off the compressor, at this point I would be concerned. Clean everything as you said, including the A/C compressor, and then check again.
Incidentally, how did that alternator saga end? At some point I lost track of it.
