Uh oh...

Hey all I have a question..more like a concern.
I got $10 worth of "diesel" on thursday night. Since then my car hasn't been able to start. Granted it was 12 degrees all day friday, however my car has started (with effort) in these conditions before. I'm afraid that the guy at the gas station misunderstood me and put gasoline in it instead. I have my receipt but it doesn't show what type, only how much I paid. I had about 1/8 of a tank left before I went to the station. I drove home which is 1.8 miles approximately. Could I even have made it home if it were infact gasoline? PLEASE HELP!!!

give them a call to find out how much a gallon of diesel cost yesterday and match it up with your receipt. i've never put gasoline in a diesel tank but people mix regular unleaded gasoline, diesel and vegetable oil and put it in their tanks sometimes - i'm not sure if you could drive with the 1/8 diesel to 7/8 gasoline ratio though. i've also heard of the reverse (diesel in motorcycle by accident) and it was able to run but really crappy until the diesel was gone.

Yet another of many, many reasons why not to live in NJ.

I assume the fuel was pumped by a pump jockey; I would also assume the filling station is on the hook to fix your car. They need to pay to have the tank removed and cleaned. As correctly noted above the price will indicate if gas or diesel (the cheaper price…). Then file a complaint.

The MB owners manual for my 85' 300d says to add 10% or 15% (dont have the book in front of me) of gasoline to your diesel on very cold temps. You might just try to unhook the fuel line under the tank and just drain into a bucket(I use a pair of vice grips on the line) then fill with diesel again. Then unhook your fuel line before the IP and turn the motor over a few times to remove what is in the lines. I would also change the filters. Not a fun job to do, but you could have it running in a couple of hours.

ok so why not just get the station to fill the tank with deisel .
then remove the fuel line after the second fuel filter and purge the line of the rich mixture re connect and crank it till she fires!
ao so long as you have a recept get the gas station to pay for having it done .

Get a syphon pump and a large (5-gallon) container.
Syphon out all of the gas. What to do with it? Not sure.
Hopefully you should be able to get enough out without having to get under the car to disconnect the hose.
Then put (at least) 5 gallons of diesel into the tank.
Pump the primer pump about 50 times to circulate the gas into the tank.
It should start after that.

A little bit of gas is okay in cold weather as mentioned earlier.

Of course, unless it's just too cold outside for your car to start.

I know there are ways to get the gas out, but THEY SCREWED UP! They should make good for anything related to this mistake. It says diesel fuel in your filler flap, and on the back of the car, not to mention the rattle and the smell!!

An older friend of mine said a dumb gas jockey put gas in his TRACTOR TRAILER TRUCK! He said he started driving and the thing just took off on him with no throttle. The station made good for it. SAVE that receipt.

Another Update

Well I got in touch with the owner of the station and luckily I paid with a debit card so I got and kep the receipt. He came over to my house and smelled inside the tank and acknowledged that it smelled of gasoline. He agreed to pay for everything so it seems that everything is going to be ok. He'll pay for the towing to an MB dealer and he'll pay for the repairs at the MB dealer. He offered to do the work at his shop/gas station and I "politely" declined saying no way in hell. Unfortunatly the receipt just shows the amount I paid and not the price per gallon i.e. 2.49 @ 10.00 (I think that's how it would show). But he kept saying he believed me and that he would pay for the repairs blah blah blah..I'm wondering what it would have to take to get a new engine out of the whole ordeal (haha just kidding...sorta). I'm still kinda pissed but what the heck can you do?
