Ive been taking it easy on the benz as I have been driving my elderly mother around to shop in the storm on the east coast this weekend. In 2nd gear in a 20mph zone and 3rd gear in a 35mph zone we could hear harmonics or off key flute noises from the gear shifter boot. When I pressed the clutch in and reved it, no effect on the noise. When I braked, they changed and speed up they changed. Also when I wiggled the gear shifter it changed a bit.
Normally I get a bit of a hum in 4th gear at 55, then it goes away.
Today driving 67 miles in heavy rain up to 75mph and no noises.
Any idea what that noise was? Is it anything to worry about? What noise means the tranny is going? How long can you go before the tranny expires after that point?
I have not experienced such noises and I have 2 manual 240D's. Have you checked to make sure it's simply not your tires? Have you ruled out bearings, axle boots, and the rear differential?
And another thing... check all your shifter bushings. My automatic had a resonance like your describing, and it was a bad bushing inside the shifter assembly.
Strangely it makes the noise when its dry out. I am wondering if its the center support bearing which was changed a few months ago.
I read the manual and it said to use type a automatic transmission fluid. WHAT??? ATF in a manual tranny?
I was going to drive the front half on the sidewalk to get enough room to crawl under the car and do a tranny fluid change, but cant find the fill plug. I found the drain plug on the bottom rear of it, but looks like its less than 17mm.
Think the dealer can do it for around 50 bucks? Is the fill plug on drivers or passenger side and how do you go about getting fluid in it? Pump, funnel, etc.
No opinions on atf vs 80w oil? I thought I would give it one more shot this morning and am on the fence about what to put back in it. Maybe they use atf incase a seal breaks it wont ruin the clutch?
