OK fellas, I know you might be getting a little bit tired of my inquisitive nature (or think I have some problems with commitment), but I am still trying to join the Benz fraternity. I guess that is a genetic thing, me being German and all.
Anyways, I've been offered a 1985 300D, obviously Turbodiesel, with 268K miles. Talked to the owner at length, actually a motorcycle mechanic. Said the car was in good shape as far as drivetrain, transmission, timing chain etc. and just had the top end of the motor replaced (all seals) six months ago, plus a new starter put in this week. She said she needed a bigger car to lug things for her mechanic job though, and they were trying to sell the car. She said it had a wear spot on the driver's seat, and the clear coat was starting to peel. Away from that, she guaranteed no problems, vehicle carfaxed and maintained.
She was asking 1500 for the car. I'm thinking closer to 800. What's reasonable, in your opinion? I will drive out to see the car tomorrow, but have never considered (or looked at) a diesel so am even more clueless than usual. Any red flags I should be on the lookout for? Can offer to translate German car manuals in return! Thanks!!!
i'd probably pay $1500. Being diesel is a good thing, you can make your own fuel or blend a little biodiesel from the pump or whatever, you'll be saving the world from terrible pollution and improving the life of your vehicle because biodiesel increases lubricity. Or you could put a few simple modifications onto the fuel system that will allow you to run straight vegetable oil, then you don't need a processor and all that. Besides, I could very rarely find a turbodiesel at a decent price so what you've found sounds like a great deal to me. idk, but if you buy it post some pics!
