I am having a problem lately, the car is overheating when i am stuck in traffic. at least i think it is. i often see it climbing to 100C when i am stopped. i then switch on the heater and blower to maximum and it comes down to 90.
i noticed that the fan never comes on. should this come on by means of a sensor, like a thermoswitch? or is it mechanically-operated?
if it is a thermoswitch, where is this located? my engine is the 2.0 (200) 1981 version (engine 102).
do the stuff in this pic have anything to do with this... and if not, what are they??

That there is it. Take a paperclip, open it up and bridge the terminals. If the ignition is on, the fan should rev right up.

i traced the cable from the fan (magnetic?) coupling and ended up there.. i suspected that the part u mentioned is the switch, but it might have been the other part right across, so i didnt want to do anything yet.
but i will try this out today.
thanks a lot ;)
also: lets say it doesnt work, this must mean that either the fan mechanism or the relay is gone. do you know where the relay is located? under the dash somewhere or in the relax box on the right fender?
On a USA 280ce the auxiliary fan switch is the second switch from the right, costs $17 US, and another 5 minutes in labor to replace. A new switch will activate the auxilarty fan at 212 degees farenheit. The USA 240 diesel has a relay switch although I haven't found a relay switch on the USA 280E.

The black box on the right fender.

::My boss compliments on my W123 made me nervous, I never thought 23 years old car still impress her[] and although now I drive the new one, but no way I'm getting rid of the old.::
My Peugeot 405 used to do just that, and to get the temp down I used to turn on the heater and fan full on just like you do. It resulted to have an air-lock in the cooling system. Correct bleeding and problem was solved.
Btw, cool to see a fellow Maltese here in the this large internet world!
nice to see a malteser here! :) never thought there would be another w123 owner on here from malta to be honest! [8D]
i will keep this in mind but i doubt this is the case. i checked the sensor and it seems that it is always short circuit, ie. ON.
i now found out that the fuse for the fan and rear demister (same fuse) keeps blowing whenever i switch on the demister. i will have to find out what the problem is, ie. if the demister is at fault or the fan, or maybe both. but i really do not have any free time on my hands currently so this will have to wait i guess! :)
