G'day from downunder,my 230 TE is right hand drive. Can the power steering box and power steering pump from a left hand drive Mercedes 230 TE / 123 chassis,be used in the right hand drive vehicle? Are the units identical? Thanks thoth_9
I don't know for sure, but I'm thinking the lack of responses means no. My advise on finding an accurate answer would be to check your local Mercedes dealer for a part# for the right hand drive unit and get somebody else from the states to get a part # for the left hand drive unit. I'll be happy to make a call for you, if necessary. Anybody else have a better idea?
EDIT: My guess would be that the pump is the same but the lines and box are different. What do I know, the only right hand drive vehicles I've ever seen are actually left hand drive vehicles with adapters.

Neither one would work. The pump would have hose fittings on the wrong side and the box would have the pitman arm mount on the wrong side, so the answer is no.

Thanks for your comments about the power steering.I posted the query, as I noticed in American catalogues that fully rebuilt units are available at reasonable cost, whereas in Australia,I have been advised that only new seals can be installed, but a full rebuild is too expensive and new units would have to be bought.I have also been told that just to replace the seals will cost over $500 Aust.,and that I would not be able to install the seal kit myself, due to the complexity of the equipment and the need for specialised tools.I will follow this up with my parts supplier and let you know what happens. It is still the best car I have ever owned and it is still coping with the rocky goat track that I commute on every day,an 82 klm trip.I have had a roo run into the side of the car,but it did not even leave a dent, just some blood and drool.Peter.

Waaaaiiit!! All you need to do is replace the seals like you mentioned, Thoth. Why you need to replace both units?
I just bought the repair kit for the box, they are two kind of brand, one is Lemforder and the other is OEM. The OEM cost is US$ 20 (Twenty US Dollars), while the Lemforder is cheaper. I use the OEM of course.
Due to excessive play in the wheel, I had replace my power steering BOX and replace the seals as well. The box costs me US$ 150 rebuilt.
I had to do this since the counternuts on the box is no longer adjustable.
Gone are the excessive steering wheel play!
