bought a 82 300d turbo and when i went to look at it it sounded like a valve was way out (loose)
took it for a ride and seemed to be hitting on all 5 and drove good aside from the miss-matched tires.
the body is very good with only a tiny spot of rust behind the drivers rear wheel.
he also installed a 4 speed.
Anyway i got it home and ran the valves some tight and some loose but nothing that would indicate where the tapping sound was comming from.
i put it all back together and the tapping is there.
i started cracking injector lines to kill each cyl. and the tapping was almost gone when i cracked #4.
the noise sounds like it is comming from the valve cover area but may be a piston problem?
this is not the original engine he told me it was out of a 84 sd where would i find the engine numbers to tell what it is?
there is a good amount of blow-by so i figure the engine is tired anyway.
where is a good place to find engine rebuild parts because used engines are just that used and who knows how many miles are on them seeing how most of the odometers fail anyway.
exactly what I am dealing with now. could be the wrist pin...and from what I was told, if it is the wrist pin, it may be more cost effective to put in a GOOD used engine.
