Temp gauge in 300D not working

The temperature gauge on my recently acquired 300D is not working. I have also noticed that there is a sort of sensor above the thermostat housing, but there is no cable running from this sensor. Could this be the cause of the problem?
Where does this cable go to, and what colour should it be? I would like to reconnect this cable.

you could try to look for a sender on the block right above the injection pump. at least on an 84 that's where it is.
