hey everyone, I was given a 82d yesterday in running order, and will pass MA inspection, the only problem I have is in drive or reverse, if I goose the throttle on and off very fast the car will stall,I know what your thinking, yes, the filters are fresh, so is the full tank of diesel and additive, I replaced the egr and cleaned the manifold acess { was gummed up solid.} car runs good I checked the over head and the first exaust to adjust was tight , my guess it was never done[xx(]at start up the glow plugs funtion correctly and are new,has 217,000 on the clock.heres the question and I think I know the answer but will ask anyway. If the valves are too tight will this give me the drivability problem of off idle stall? the start up idle is poor also but ok after a short time , but wants to stall. regardless of engine temp. its idling at 700 rpm inpark. If I feed the throttle up slow ,It will not stall but if I goose it it will,.It restarts easily. but the idle is terrible at start up and have to keep the foot on the throttle to start it .I am assuming all the valves are too tight judging by the first one Idid before It got too dark.any help?I think with setting the valves and a poss pump timing adjustment, I may be ok. Is it true that adjustin g the pump timing while the engine is running can damage it? [:0]
ok this morning I set the overhead and it sounds beautiful and were the valves ever tight , reset the alda and road test, like a new car.the stalling problem is gone and this car is fast, now for the exauset leak and new brakes. this is a lesson, do your service by the book.the cold stall at start up is gone so is the injector nailing. a little tech help tho, take a cheap 14 mm wrench and bend it at the open end at a 45 degree use the wrenches that you do to loosen and tighten but use the bent wrench to get at the adjustments that ate close to the cam supports or firewall. gets in to the tight spaces and is faster then the factory wrenches. if you need the factory wrenches they are made by hadzet co. in germany. a crows foot might work as good.
