the felt/foam pad that sticks to the underside of the hood was drooping the other day, half came detached, then i checked it again today and its gone lol..mustve gotten sucked into the fan or something... does it have a critical purpose or will i be able to get away with no pad for the time being? thx
You may need it for heat, but it doesn't help that the stupid pad disintegrates so quickly, that foam that the pad is made out of gets wet every now and then, but when it dries it seems to get more and more brittle. Does anybody know of a good replacement material? It should be easy to cut the material yourself, and if you can get something more sturdy, then you are in good shape!
It’s an easy fix, makes the hood look good and keeps heat from the hood paint.
Use the following cleaner/adhesive:
>> 3M Glue Remover (P/N 99-012) $9.98 ea (12 oz spray can)
>> 3M Super Trim Adhesive (P/N 830016) $17.50 ea (12 oz spray can
Cover the engine compartment with a drop cloth. The old pad comes of easily using a plastic scraper. Clean off the old adhesive. Spray new adhesive on the pad and hood and let it sit for about five minutes. Apply the pad to the hood beginning at the front. Smooth out the bubbles and wrinkles and that’s it.

many dsls dont have the cladding as standard and dont have paint problems with the heat "it dosnt get that hot", mb use it to silence the noise of the dsl engine

RE: hood pad neccesary?
after buying a brand new one seven years ago to put on my w123, my dad and i laughed when i got it...
you could make a better one out of armorflex and upholstery / carpet glue...
armorflex - im not sure if that is the correct name or a trade name...but it is the matt black foam covering used in the HVAC world to wrap everything from hot water tanks to ducting...its meant to block heat and sound...work in damp areas and high temp zones...ect..
