1974 116280se type of oil and tranny fluid?

hey folks i am currently saving up to get the valve and head gaskets machined and replaced. what type of oil is the best to run until i can take care of that? i have tried different oils and tran fluid but i don't know the difference. what should i use?currently the car runs pretty good with only a gust of smoke sometimes at startup and a gust of smoke sometimes during extreme acceleration.

Change your valve guides to cure the smoke at start up.

Dexron for the transmission
10W30 or 10W40 for oil now
5W-30 or 10W-30 after top end rebuild

Chevron Delo, an oil often used in turbo charged diesel engine, also well suited to our engine, has the old ZDDP additive levels to protect the tappets, lobes etc.in older engines from wear. I like he 15-40.
Other U.S. motor oil makers, incl. synthetic, have quietly reduced the amount of ZDDP.
Good for modern engines build to small material tolerances and with improved metallurgy.

Castrol makes a classic oil in XL20w-50 with all the ZDDP needed for vintage engines.
