I tried starting my 1980 300SD this evening, and to my dismay she wouldn't go. THe temperature must be about 35 or 40 degrees, so not that cold. I just recently had new Bosch plugs put in, and I am using a deisel additive. Unfortunately my block heater cord has been severed.
Here are my questions:
1) The previous owner mentioned using starter fluid. Where exactly would I spray this into?
2) I know that I am supposed to let the glow plugs warm up, but for how long? The glow plug light on my dash stays lit for about 3 seconds, but if I keep my key in position will the glow plugs keep warming, or do the plugs warm for the same duration as the light on my dash? Basically, if I keep my key in position for 30 seconds, will the plugs warm for this period of time?
Any help or recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!
The glow plug indicator light on the dash usually tells you when the glow plugs are sufficiently heated to start the engine by turning off. A second recycling of the glow plugs before you try start the car helps. Also the cold starting technique for our diesel suggests pumping the fuel pedal 5 or 6 times prior to starting. I generally hold the pedal down a little but do not pump it. Ironically, I drove ours today because the roads have had enough rain to wash the salt off them. I like to exercise the car and all the systems at least monthly, preferrably weekly. We have a long cycle, old style, glow plug system in our 1978 but the car has always been a good starter. By the way, I am just east of you in Wisconsin.
You should never have to use starting fluid. If the PO has been resorting to this then that tells me there is an issue that needs to be addressed.
I would check the glow plugs. Make sure that they are all functioning.
