well my 280se isnt charging. is there an external voltage regulator? when i got the car it had an alternator in the trunk as well leading me to believe that the car has had this problem before. i know on some cars there is an alternator fuse. dont see one on this 116. i tried my multi meter and im getting nothing but the battery voltage with no indication of charging. which terminal on the alternator should i be getting 14 volts on? id hate to get a new alternator if i dont have to. maybe ill just wire up a CHEVROLET alternator on there.....i know that will work![:D] thanks for any help i can get
thats what i thought....to me thats considered internal. external to me would mean that its mounted away from the alternator. well looks like i gotta replace the alternator then[:(]

RE: alternator problem
Take it off and get it bench tested at a parts store if
they still do that in the lower 48[:)]You can buy the
voltage regulator instead of the whole alternator if that's all it is.Way cheaper too[;)]
well i just put on a later model benz alternator on there. a 90 amp unit from a c280[:D]works just fine now!
by the way does this car (1980 280se) have a 3 or 4 speed transmission?[?] best i can tell is that its a 3 speed or does the car onlt take off in second gear when i place it in drive? i know some mercedes are like that[8)]thanks!
