well im kinda new here [:D]
i recently aquired a really cheap 80 280se. well my question is do these things have problems with the head gaskets? i have noticed what appears to be a lot of condensation inside the valve cover. i managed to get the car running after alot of work and it doesnt run all that bad after sitting for over a year. still stumbles some on acceleration but it idles well and the coolant level doesnt seem to be diminishing, so im at a loss here. dont really feel like replacing the head gasket but if i have to then so be it. so far i havent performed any pressure checks or blown head gasket checks. i was just looking to see if the head gasket is a common problem on these cars. by the way the car has 117k miles on it. thanks in advance![^] mike
Blown head gaskets on M110 are not overly common, but does happen. It's quite the project if you haven't done
one before but not impossible.
If you have a vacumm gauge, test and if the needle jumps between 10 to 25 in/Hg. as the rpm's are increased then it is suspect.Does it overheat and do you have to add coolant frequently?
As far as the stumble goes, look in the Bosch K & D
Jetronic troubleshooting thread to determine the problem. If your control pressure is too high or if your airflow sensor is sticking and/or binding, then
this may be the problem among other things. Also
confirm that the resistance in your plug wires is not too high.
Also, welcome to the W116 forum and hope all of us can help you get her in tip top shape[:)]
thanks, ive been awaiting your tutorial on the air flow meter rebuild. ive replaced quite a few head gaskets in my time but this will be the first on a mercedes. i have found benzworld quite useful so far.
i also have a 1994 c280 ( i love that car!) as well and im looking at getting a 1977 280e as well that has a fuel problem. i managed to get my brother to buy a nice 1992 190e 2.6 that he likes very much! gotta love the fine german engineering! im sure ill be around here for awhile![;)]
Yeah, been meaning to get that done[^]I think the first
step is to get the laptop out of my garage[;)]Then I
can get the airflow sensor rebuild thread on it's way.
