300SD injection pump timing...

Anyone know any good sources (web links, books, etc) for adjusting injection pump timing? I'll admit here that what I really need is something like "Injection Pump Timing for Dummies" or "The Complete Idiot's guide to Injection Pump Timing"! I haven't been able to find much of anything using search engines.

I finally got my 300SD running but it has that "diesel clatter" really loud at idle. I mean you cannot carry on a conversation anywhere near the front of the car without yelling. I've done the valve adjustment (it was already pretty close to right) and have flushed the entire fuel system. I've been told on another forum that it sounds like the pump is too far advanced. I need something simple to understand with pictures that explains how to set the timing because I know very little about diesels other than the basic theory of how they work. The car seems to run fine other than the horrendous noise. It actually quiets down as soon as it's under even a mild load but as soon as I let off the throttle, "CLATTER, CLATTER, CLATTER!"

Yeah, that site has the dead link I keep running into. "BoostnBenz" posted the timing link to some web page by "Richard Easley" in a DYI on Mercedes Shopforum and also said he had a better way to adjust the timing using some lockout tool that he was going to post but never did.

I just got back from Border's Books. Couldn't find anything on Mercedes-Benz. It's really frustrating how little info I'm able to find on these cars.[:(!]
