When my car shifts from 1st to 2nd - sometimes i feel a "kick to the behind". It usually happens when i hard press the gas pedal after the stop sign and the car is forced to quickly accelerate. When i smoothly press the gas the shifting happens very smoothly. Anyone can enlighten me on the causes and, maybe, some solution?
When your engine has very little vacuum, like when your throttle is wide open, the transmission is supposed to shift harder so it doesn't slip. A vacuum leak can cause hard shifts too.
It's actually going from second to third. Those transmissions start in second gear. You need to manually place the selector lever into the "low" position to engage first gear.
It's by design; if you start from a stop by pressing the accelerator normally (smoothly) then you'll start in 2nd gear by default
If you floor it or start aggressively the transmission will select 1st gear which is pretty short, and the change from 1st to 2nd will be pretty firm.
You can also start in first by selecting L, in all other options (S and D) you will start in 2nd unless flooring it.
Check your owners manual but most older mercs I've owned have this transmission design, a 4 speed trans that normally works as a 3 speed
