I had something like that happen on my W123. Turned out that the wiring going to the backlights on door window switches was on the same circuit as the cluster lighting. The wire inside the door would short when the door was opened. In my case, it was one rear door, so this only happened if we happened top open that door at night!
You are fortunate that the fuse blows. In my case, eventually the traces on the cluster printed circuit board blew!
First step is to get the wiring diagram and see what else is on that lighting circuit.
