Just bought beautifully maintained 1973 Merc (280). It drives beautifully but idles rough (to the point that it sometimes stalls while stopped on red light). Is the issue with carburetor or should i be looking somewhere else?
As the point rider wears down, timing will retard a bit and can get to the point where the points don't open at low engine speed, just riding along the distributor cam. The symptom you describe is exactly what I would expect to see. It higher RPMs the points open.
So... Check to assure you have a points gap. If adjusting the points, you need to set the timing afterwards too.
Interesting. It sounds like you will be off the beaten path and need to either figure out how to tune the carb that is currently on the car, or find a carb that would be original to the car. Maybe do both.
Was the mechanic able to make any improvements for you?
It seems it's some strange version of Weber carb without electric choke - in essence a wrong carb for the car.
I pulled the plug and got the Weber K248 kit that should get here in 3 days - i'll post what happens when it arrives here.
