I am excited as I have purchased another project car!
A 1973 Meceredes R107 450SL.
Before I get started on it, I need to learn about it.
What would be a reasonable workshop manual I can download or obtain in book form?
There are several placed that offer downloads for reasonable money but I want tto get a good one.
if anyone has donwloaded a manual and is happy with it, please let me know where from.
The car you have uses the Djetronic fuel injection system (as do all 107s from 71-75) If you scroll down in rumbs link, you will come to the djet section. Lots of good stuff there - especially the Comprehensive guide. THis link describes how the injection system works and has some troubleshooting guides: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c...s-bosch-d-jetronic-training.html#post12227857
Several of us have similar questions, so please post questions if you have any!
Apart from smelling of fuel and idling really wildly high, it runs quite well.
The major problem is the rust.
I am trying to find out how to inpect that bulkhead. I have the heater blower motor cover off but I can't see much in there.
Do I need to remove the 2 louvre grilles to see thsi properly?
SLShop in UK has some good info on bulkhead repair (we call it a firewall!). You can see some of the firewall by looking up from passenger/driver foot wells. If your battery is in engine bay, remove it and the tray and check the crossbeam and bulkhead behind it. Other side is, I think, behind brake booster, but can be seen. Then there is the part inside the blower which can easily be removed.
Graham. Thank you for adding this link. Just browsing through the SL site I discovered that they now make a replacement heater fan AND Box for around 400 pounds. that's around $520. Those I have seen available on Ebay were around $1600. Thanks.
I have opened the 2 grilles but found nothing much rust like visible in there.
I have the blower motor cover off but not removed the blower assembly. I noticed that there are some new washers and nuts visible on the blower so someone else has been in there before me.
I wonder if I should rather remove the bonnet / hood as it is not easy to much with it on?
There is still heaps of water in the car, particularly in the driver side footwell = Your passenger side.
I have th carpets out to dry but there is insulation matting there that I ghave not been able to get out yet.
The accelerator pedal has actually rusted off the floor pan.
Had that happen on my 300D. Not having a welder myself, I made a sandwich S/S plate on each side, 1/4" rivets and a big bolt in center. Plus lot's of POR-15 Patch.
For the 123, MB actually sold the tab that is welded to the floor. But you needs something to weld to!
Based on the water in your car, I would take interior out (carpets, seat etc) and scrape the floor pans down to bare metal. Amazing what you can find under the carpets and soundproofing!
