1984 500 SEL HELP

Cleaning out my great grand fathers garage. I came across his 500 SEL. Since he has passed away I was given the task to find out more about it. I looked through the paperwork and noticed everything was in German. It seems he purchased this on the grey market . It is in excellent shape all original. It has 91k miles on it and has always been stored in a garage. I noticed he kept every bit a paperwork with it. I would like to keep it for myself but I need to figure out how much to pay the estate. The VIN # is WDB1260371A035945. Any help would be appreciated.

I generally start with Nada (dot com) and see what they value things at. I also try Haggerty. eBay will give a good idea of what the things sell for, as will Auto Trader and related magazines...

The bad news is if it hasn't been started and run regularly for a few years you more than likely will have some major problems with the fuel system. This can be a large expense. I'm talking up in the $3000.00 range if it's done by a shop.

Nice cars but not super collectible. Got an '85 500SEL myself and it's a great highway cruiser and Sunday driver. 13-15 MPG in town puts a damper on driving it around.

In good driving condition? $2000-$4000 depending on everything working.

Unknown driving condition? $500-$2000.

I don't know your family situation, but if they were magnanimous I think they would be happy you want to keep it for your self. (Give it to you) An honor to your grandfather. In any case I would not pay more than a few thousand for it. I had a 1984 500SEC and that engine was bullet proof, at least for me.

Took it out this evening washed it and drove it. The car's paint is perfect. The interior looks great. The car runs perfect and handles great so is 5k a good offer he has all the paperwork for every little thing done. I didn't realize how meticulous he was tomorrow I'm pulling out the 77 450 anything I should look for on it.

126037 VIN denotes a car with full hydro suspension. Very nice option similar to the 6.9 system. Yes we need pics!

Many of those on-line sites like Hagerty have crazy high valuations. If they were correct my older cars would be long gone!

Found this comparable car with much higher mileage for $4500 or offers. If you could get the car for $4-5k I think that would be fair. Be prepared to spend quite a bit more in maintenance and repairs especially if you can't do the work yourself.

Nice, but expensive when things go wrong?? I seem to recall old time mechanics saying that was one reason not to buy a 6.9.

Nah the system gets a bad rep because folks take it to a shop and then it turns into a part swap which can be very expensive. The system is very reliable if maintained.
