The Great Missing Cars

I'm trying to put together a list of significant missing sports cars for a book project, cars that have dropped off the map but that might still be out there somewhere (ie, the Max Wax Ferrari 375 MM, the stolen Goldfinger DB5). I'm not asking anyone to give up any secrets, but if you have any tips (and photos!), I'd love to talk to you. I'm particularly interested in the two US SLSs, 8467 198 106/2 and 8742 620 070/1, but also anything from an SSK on up.

Please email me at I can't promise any reward beyond a credit in the book, but it should be a whole lot of fun.

So you are looking for more information on some lost special MB cars?

Can you tell us why the specific cars are special? When the disappeared? Maybe a teaser for your book?

Hi Fonzi,

The book's pretty straightforward, stories of about 45 great non-US cars that have dropped off the map. It'll be from Car Tech, the second "Lost" title after this spring's Lost Muscle Cars

I know very little about those two particular chassis beyond what's at, so I'm just starting my research. I'm also speaking with MB Classic folks.

Aside from those 300 SLSs, I'm interested in any other good stories about cars that have dropped off the map (with a grain of truth)--like an SSK; an alloy 300SL; or even something like an AMG Hammer. And of course, other marques, as well.

What about one of the 6.8 l "Rote Sau"? As far as I know there was two of them. One, which was the second that was built I believe, was later sold to Matra to test Aircraft tires. They even stretched it. It was later crushed in 1992.

And the other one I don't know where it disappeared. Might still be out there somewhere?

It's really too bad – on one side I can understand that back then they had to sell this car, for new projects. It's the car that started it all, AMG maybe wouldn't exist today if they hadn't sold this car back then. But then, in 1992, I'd believe they had enough money to buy the car back. They should have done it, it's a shame really.
