W108 Seatbelt Question

Hello all,

I'm considering a w108 280SE 4.5, and I'd like to know if any has retrofitted retractable 3 point rear belts? I've seen non-retractable 3 point belts for the front, and I'm assuming there are the same for the rear, but are there retractable types available?

I added 3 point belts to the front of my '72' 280SEL 4.5. I added one anchor point to accommodate the new belts.

I added 3 point seat belts to the rear, what was interesting is the outboard seats had anchors already in place! this was a '72 300SEL and I guess some countries required the shoulder belt, while the US did not. For the center seat I added an anchor. I put the retractors on the parcel shelf, made install easy and they work great. I also put new belts in the front as well. I used seatbelt planet for the belts, total was $500 for 5 seatbelts with vintage style buckles.

TZ_280SEL, on the second photo how did you add the second required anchor point to the frame? I am having three point reel seatbelts added to my 72 280se and my mechanic is not sure how to access the backside of the hole after the bolt is pushed thru. The rocker panel is like a tube so to get to the hole you would have to cut out a panel in the rocker.

best regards,
Napster

I drilled a hole larger than the mounting bolt into a piece of flat bar and welded a nut to the backside of it. I drilled an oversized hole in the rocker where I wanted the seat belt to mount. I then cut a slot in the top of the rocker big enough to slide the flat bar/nut combination through and welded the flat bar to the oversized hole. Then I sealed up the slot in the rocker. If its going to pull out, it will have to pull a 1" x 2" piece of flat bar through the rocker. It'll survive longer than me.

TZ_280sel, thank you so much for the info. I have already passed it on to my mechanic.
