1974 240D starting issues when warm

Essentially as a graduation gift my parents decided to take my car to a mechanic as it did not run. So I said okay sweet sounds good. Later they got the car fired up, had 3 bad glow plugs and it presented a loud knocking noise as the mechanic explained. (The person who had the car before me said the injectors were messed up wlen I dropped off the car) so I told him it was most likely an injector knock. (He's sending them out to get tested) However after messing with the car more he told me that it doesnt want to start once the car gets up to proper temperature and has to cool back down before starting again. What could that be caused by?

Check for collapsing fuel lines and dirty filters.

I'd compression test it.

My 1973 220d wouldn't start when warm and it had 312,200 miles on it when I rebuilt the engine. That fixed the problem. When I took the head off the engine, the pistons wiggled around in the cylinders. Before re-building the engine, it also used a quart of oil every 50 miles.

Best Regards,

Did it have a recent valve adjustment?
