water leak from.... left side of engine block?!?!

My 1971 220D has been sidelined for 20 months after a head gasket failure and an electrical gremlin that I finally have cornered. It is back together and I put 1/2 gallon water in the radiator. Then I heard water running.... I found a small stream coming from just under/beside the fuel injector pump on the left side of the engine block. First thought: oh, no! there was water and not enough anti-freeze left and something froze. Second thought: Maybe this is where all the coolant went in the first place, although the head gasket was bad. (There was orange residue from antifreeze on the #4 piston head plus a white plume of smoke trailing me at the time.)

Before I pull off the newly timed injector pump, someone please tell me there's a hose or a plug under there is easily fixable. I don't think duct tape is going to fix this one.....

I don't have an engine to look at, but I was in the EPC and took a look. Behind the injection pump, there is a large screw plug and a sealing ring. They seal the water jacket. That's my guess as to the problem.

Sorry.

Thanks, Chuck! When I saw that stream, I knew it had to be something like that. And either way, I guess I'd be taking the injector pump off... but I know what to expect.

Glancing at your info, it reminds me that I have some cousins in Chantilly I need to visit...
