Can the M130 engines run lead free?

Hi Benzworld!

Very simple and easy question - can the M130 engines run on lead free petrol? I do believe the M130 engines are aluminum heads, which should mean the valve seats are already hardened (but do correct me if I'm wrong with the above information!).

I've always added Shell's lead additive to my fuel, but do I actually need it? The previous owner did it as well, but he said it "could probably run without, I just add it for peace of mind".

No need for added lead. Benz (and most if not all European petrol engines) have had the hardened seats since the early '60's.

I belive the official guidelines also say that you should check valve clearance twice as often; at least initially. otherwise it should be completely compatible
