I would look at a re ring job very closely. Many people don't pay attention to cylinder taper or piston clearance on rebuilds. Did they remove the taper or just hone it for new rings?

The seller is just down the road from me. He is a long-time MBCA member, rally-er, and autocrosser, about as straight as they come. I looked over the goods and have no reason to doubt the description and pictures. The honing was done by a good local shop.

I will go out on a limb and say it's about as good as it gets for a used 130 engine.

Be aware that the engine number is not a factory stamp. So this is probably a dealer-installed short- or long-block. For a SL, the important thing is the tach drive, which it has, and the sedan engines don't.

No horse in the race other than to help a fellow car guy move some stuff.

As so often happens, the OP seems to have lost interest.

The Virginia refurbished one seems an excellent deal when compared to the oringinal one in California. In the latters case, I wouldn't pay anywhere close to that for the patina. Give me the freshly rebuilt one for a similar cost please.

I have a 1971 280SE with a rebuild engine ($8500 receipt in hand) in my parts car. I bought the parts car for the engine and the $46,000 in receipts that came with the car. It is an entire rust bucket. I don't know whether or not I'm going to use the engine (I bought it to potentially transplant in a 1965 300SE) but I'm open to high offers for the car and/or engine. The car is a good driver, just a rust bucket.

Currently: 1967 250 SL, 1963 220Sb, 1965 300SE Lang, 1971 280SE parts car, 1972 Alfa GTV, 1965 Alfa Duetto, 1993 BMW R100R
Past: 1971 250 C, 1985 300 TD, 1967 250 S, 1968 280 S,1981 300 D, 1982 280CE, 3 Facel Vegas, Borgward Isabella Coupe, Alfa 2600 Sprint, Volvo P1900 (yes), numerous less interesting Volvos, ...
