The paint color code will be on the metal data plate to the right of the hood latch on the radiator surround.
It looks metallic to me, and anthracite... 172.
Did you take the photo? If you did... was it metallic paint?
Here is a photo of a 172G Anthracite 6.3 I took a photo of last Summer.
The car nor the photo is mine. I pulled the picture from Tom's Mercedes Benz 108/109 Resource Site
Your answer will be on the data plate as indicated. Should have said that in my 1st post
You might have to come up with more than one photo/angle. And even then the car looks different in direct or indirect sunlight, time of day, surrounding landscape (-color) and bright blue sky bouncing off the paint.
Anthracite came in different shades (at least two metallic), and looks different faded or new.
So your best bet is the original data card or option plate and if the car was repainted the new paint might have not come out the same as factory.
Agreed on the picture Alex, unfortunately it was the only picture of that particular 300SEL that I could find. Thank you for your help
Difficult to pin with the current photo but most likely anthracite grey .
My 126 300se has it, was it available in early 70s?
Thank you sir
If the plate is missing on your car then contact MBZ with your VIN.
They can tell you the proper paint code without the guess work.
They will even provide you with a copy of the original build sheet.
Thank you all for your help, it's greatly appreciated
