350 SE 1972 - Data Plate / VIN Translation

Hello, if anybody can help me to find more info. Yesterday I bought this car and soon I will start to restore her. It will be my second MB. I am more than proud because it was the best model of new S-class in 1972 - in the year when new W116 was introduced - so it is the one of few still alive W116 350 SE I believe.

I am not a lazy guy - I have already found many data - but I am not sure if I am correct:

VIN 116028 10 007823

116028 means 116.028 W116 E35

10 - 1 - LHD, 0 - manual transmission

007823 - her production number - so she was 7823 car of W116 produced in MB - double 0 is just an empty digit waiting for bigger No - if am I right of course

Plate:

First line:

466 580 592 620

means:

466 CENTRAL LOCKING SYSTEM

580 BEHR AIR CONDITIONER

592 GREEN HEAT-INSULATING GLASS ALL ROUND, HEATED REAR WINDOW, LAMINATED SAFETY GLASS - TINTED STRIP

620 EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM

Second line:

906 G --- -

means:

906 - Gray Blue Metallic 1972 - 1979 - car has still original paint !!!

G from Glasurit
--- roof same colour
- code for the paint

Third line:

116028 10 5

means

116028 10 as above

5 - is a country - no idea which?

Fourth line - and here I have no idea!!! Please help!!!

3D M 088109 83175

Many thanks for your kind help

Hi - Welcome.
I don't know what the 4th line means. If you submit your VIN with proof of ownership to Mercedes (Classic Center) they will provide you with the Datacard which will show more information (including key code, etc).

Technically 116.029 means (W116) 350 SE sedan (short wheel base) with the M116 V8 engine. I'm not famiar with the E35 designation for the M116 engine.

Rare (at least in the states) to have a w116 with manual transmission.

Enjoy!
Scott

Garage
5 means europe other than germany. the actual country will be on your data card.

I found someone that said:

The first set of numbers on the bottom line is the Production number and the second set of numbers on the bottom line is the build number or what is sometimes called the Assembly Line number. The Production number on the Data Plate omits the first number on the Data Card.

Hello Scoot and Rumb,

Great thanks for your comments. Of course I will apply to Classic Centre. But the main problem is that I am collecting my car only today and all documents I will have in order for about 2 weeks. I must register her for my own name and than I will be able to prove my ownership. Anyway data what I collected is enough to know that car has original colour, original interior, original engine and really it is 1972 - what I was looking for. I found many classic MB with another engine or after serious changes. So VIN and other numbers are very useful to check any car. I have several old cars and always I am buying them when they are in original specification and I am doing my best to return them to original conditions and look. Unfortunately I have no origin al radio inside but I traced a previous owner and he has still many spare parts in his home. Maybe he has some papers from her too.

Best greetings Rafal

Negative answer from MB Classic

Hello Scott,

Here is an answer from MB Classic Centre (yes, I know that in English after Kind Regards should be the name of person who written a message).

Simply saying: negative ... repeat ... negative. I do not believe that there is no evidence about my car in MB.

Of course I will try in suggested places but of course it will cost money :-)

Dear Mr Zahorski,

Thank you very much for your e-mail.

We apologize, but we (Mercedes-Benz Classic Customer Center) are not able to issue a datacard for your vehicle.

Please contact your local Mercedes-Benz dealership in your home country to apply for a datacard.

The department for service and parts is able to provide a datacard for your vehicle.

Thank you for your understanding.

Kind regards

They aren't saying no. They (Classic Center in Germany) is saying that they want you to get the datacard from a MB dealer in Poland. This should not cost any money. Wait until you get your paperwork and proof of ownership. If the Mercedes dealer in Poland will not provide you with the datacard (a COPY of the data card, not original) then try the Classic Center in the United States. Ask Tom Hanson.

I see that German companies are learning American Corporate idiosyncrasies.
By all means do not put your name on the bottom of the letter or they can trace it back to the idiot who wrote it...
