Wheel question W111

Hi I'm a newbie here ...
I have a 68 coupe that I just got some metal wheels for, as it now has spoke wheels. I'm trying to figure out does it matter how well the wheels are painted, because once you put the trim rings on that will pretty much cover the overall wheel am I correct.

thanks
Donovan

I would guess that it depends on the type of trim rings you have. Here's an example I found where the blue of the wheel is visible:

Are your wheels 14"?

Congrats-nice to have another coupe owner on the forum! I would buy and keep every coupe specific part you can find-they are getting rare.

Howdy. I'm trying to imagine what "spoke" wheels you might have on your coupe. As for what is correct, for 1968 you could either have the full wheel cover or more likely the dog dish and trim ring combination. If you have the dog dish and trim ring, then both the wheel style and color are relevant. If you have the full wheel cover than the wheel style (round vent holes vs vent slits) become irrelevant, as does the wheel color which would be black.

@Scoot
Thanks for coming along to help with this. Please check out not only the spoke wheels, but also the pictures of what look to be the 108.400.0002 wheels with dog dish tabs and a date code from 1970, well after the 11/68 wheels I have from my 1969 280s built in 12/68. Remember that discussion? Thinking that my 1969 was pretty late to have the dog dish tabs?

Anyway, see pics and more recent comments here:

Got it. Mercedes continued the wheels with dog dish nubs for caps AFTER they started using the full wheel cover. My 68 280S had original full wheel covers with the dog dish style rims. I don't know when the dog dish rims went out of production, but I do know they they were shipped on cars with full wheel covers.

I think for W108 cars the changeover between dog dish to full wheel cover was 1967 dog dish, 1968 full wheel cover, but the wheels themselves would take either for I guess a couple years.

Those look like the common full wheel covers. If they are single piece hubcaps, then I think the term "trim rings" might have caused me to believe you needed something you don't. Any old 14" wheel should work. Try your hubcaps on the wheels. The guy getting the trade should be getting a great deal since it doesn't look like you need anything special now.

So any idea what those wire wheels might be worth I've heard conflicting views on this post ...

Thanks
