W108 - bad coil?
My W108 finally started after having had a crank-no-start situation for the past 4 months (ended up with the WRD and cold start valve being bad + incorrect adjustment and a lot more).
It has always had a strong misfire on cold, however never on hot. It's still misfiring on cold and the injection system including the cold starting system has been tested and it works beautifully. We ran a strobe-light across the spark plugs and we noticed the strobe-light turned on intermittently at idle and completely stopped lighting up when revving (even though the engine did rev up). It doesn't idle 100% and it still misfires ever so slightly when hot (fires on all cylinders but it sounds like an incomplete burn, also pops some smoke out the exhaust when it skips a bit). It gets worse under hard acceleration.
We tested all 6 wires going to the spark plugs and each and every one showed inconsistencies with the strobe-light sometimes skipping a flash. Could this be the coil not delivering enough charge? There has to be something electronic not working since when I had a crank-no-start issue, it would show no signs of starting up when I cranked it, but when I stopped cranking, it would fire on a few cylinders, then either start or stall.
Could this be because of a bad coil?
