Mark,

You are correct. I should have looked closer at the pics and actually read the ad Mercedes used a similar flat-head motor in the early 4 cylinder Ponton cars like my '55 W120 180.

Bought for $200 in the early '70s, my first Mercedes was one of the last Pontons - a '61 180b with a 70 hp detuned version of the OHC 1.9L motor introduced in the mid-50s 190. I think early VW Beetles could out-drag it from a stop-light
Can't imagine what it would have been like to live with a 40 hp 180D!
